I think most people here will tell you that if you think the mine looks too scary then it's best to just stay out of it.That is a very good idea. Do what you feel comfortable with and don't go alone and let someone know where you are going.Keep someone outside the mine at least till you think it is safe.
You can do a search for mine tours and it should come up with a few "Disneyland" type mines.Also a search for mine exploring might give you the info you are looking for.(try Google).If you want to take the kids in a mine or tunnel why not Burro Schmidt's.
Any area that had a lot of activity will have plenty of mines I have been in over 50 mines and prospects in one canyon alone.
