Yes on both counts.
My Garmin ETrex (base model GPS) gives accurate current speed, maximum speed, average speed, distance traveled, and time elapsed. I even set the electronic speedometer in my Manx buggy with my GPS unit. You can use the distance and time elapsed features to make sure you get back to your car or camp before sunset (which the GPS will also tell you, along with time of sunrise and the current time).
