I drove over Steele Pass last Thursday (2/20) and Dedeckera was in pretty good shape. I didn't notice much significant change since last year. I agree that it's probably a little easier to travel down Dedeckera rather than up, but it shouldn't make that much difference. Clearance is the issue. Traveling from Saline to Eureka, you'll have to pay close attention to the road right when you leave Palm Spring. It kind of splits into several rocky trails as it heads in the the wash. After about a mile or so the road becomes more obvious. Other than those 2 spots the rest of the route is in great shape.
