I use a Garmin Etrex. It is not survey quality, but I have been surprised by the accuracy when I have compared the data to known benchmarks. It is especially handy for returning to favorite locations, or helping a friend find a favorite secret. I have dropped my pedometer when walking or hiking. The trip computer is much more accurate. I really like GPS in my vehicle when I am on long road trips. I still use my Silva Compass and map when in heavily wooded areas (which there are many in the North Coast), or when going ultralight. I find in the desert that a compass is still my favorite tool to quickly orient, because the line of sight is usually unlimited. MENDO PAUL
