I have yet to hear that a cabin clean up group forced anybody out of a cabin or forced a bunch of drunks on a couple that wanted privacy. Those cabins are first come, first served, with a two night max per trip, and 14 night max per year. These rules are a common courtesy to prevent squatters from living year round and destroying the place. Briggs suffered major road damage and you may have seen rangers or volunteers ferrying supplies to repair the road. When a work party is planned, we notify Steve Smith from the BLM and he will usually stop by to monitor the progress. Cabin adoptees follow strict protocall for repairs and have received training in the California Archaeological Site Stewardship.Scroll down and click on the Adopt a cabin info posted by Dezdan.
When you arrive at a cabin, hang the flag. at night, leave a lantern burning outside to advise off roaders that you are there. If you want company, wave them up.A coleman lantern at the geogoist cabin can be seen for 22 miles and will encourage trekers to stay elsewhere.
If you are in the Park boundary you can only clean and repair existing structures. The park service expressly forbids any additions or modifications to the back country cabins.
I strongly reccommend that all cabin visitors carry a tent and be prepared to dirt camp as the fall and winter is the busy season for the desert.I have found the Butte valley without a human visitor for a week, then so crowded it is hard to park. There is no exact science in predicting. Travel safe, and respect and enjoy the cabins.
