Just below 'Granite Wells' the sign says: "Obtain information before attempting this route". Sounds familiar... doesn't it? :)

You may be right about mixing up Stovepipe and Granite Wells.

However, there used to be a "real" Granite Wells along the 20 Mule Team Borax route to Mojave. This route went from Harmony Borax Works, along the West Side Road, through Wingate Wash and across what now is called China Lake. Granite Wells was about 50 miles east from Mojave.

It may also have been 55 miles south from Ballarat, along the road that we are now traveling towards Goler Wash.

However, when you take a close look at the mountains and the shadows on the photo, I do think you were right about Stovepipe Wells.
