Actually if you do that the evaporative cooling will make it downright cold. I usually just sleep on top of my sheets with the tent flaps all open. No mosquitos to worry about!
I definitely use the wet towels during the day, though. Especially around the head if working/exerting in the heat of the day.
We use the wet towels on the ice chests during the day, really helps to keep things cool (and I use dry ice, so things actually freeze in the ice chest).
