Storm Warning

While listening to KDWN out of Las Vegas is always an incredible experience, in the early morning of Sunday things became more bizarre than usual. I had gone to bed early Saturday night and by three AM was wide-awake. I joined the poor souls that feel a need to call radio talk shows in the wee hours of the morning. Amid the usual denunciations of all things Clintonian, illegal aliens, Kerry, the United Nations, public education, politicians in general, specific politicians, all Democrats, some Republicans, taxes and the sin de jour---gays I was suddenly jolted by the sudden interruption of what sounded like a very non-melodious alarm bell going off.
It was the National Weather Service breaking in to KDWN’s regular broadcast with an emergency warning. As near as I can remember the warning was about a large stationary storm cell centered over the eastern Death Valley in the vicinity of Highway 190. This was the first time I had ever heard and emergency broadcast of this type on regular AM radio. I don’t know if more emergency warnings were broadcast later in the day over KDWN because, mercifully, with the rising sun the station’s signal faded away.
