Went out to ride the scale RxR in Valyermo today. Blue Lupines, buttercups, purple sage, red poppy, and white starlings were the best Ive seen in years. From there we went to the poppy reserve in Lancaster. Desert wasteland!!! Place is a ghost town! Not an orange california poppy to be found.Last year, on May 1, the traffic was backed up for miles to get into that place.By may 15, the seed stock was reported as the best in 80 years, which should have made this the bumper-crop year. A late cold snap, and lack of a significant march rainfall wiped the reserve out. Those seeds will have to wait another year. In spite of no flowers, it was still nice to be at that reserve. No humans, hot wind, and untouched California desert.
