Take 'em both, along with Digonnet's "Hiking Death Valley" and Charles Lehman's "Desert Survival Handbook" (Primer Publishers, 1998). OT of your question and too heavy for a backpack, but great for getting a sense of the land you're on and those who've been there before, is Richard Lingenfelter's "Death Valley & The Amargosa: A Land of Illusion" (University of California Press).
