Boondocking in the desert:

Hello folks,
I will try to not sound too much like a newbie but I'm afraid you'll see right through me anyway so here goes:
I am retiring in December of this year and my wife and I are leaving here (Ky) and going west. A life long dream of mine has been to visit the desert. So we will be traveling in our 26' self contained fifth wheel trailer pulled with a Dodge Diesel 4X4 pick up. QUESTION: What are the draw backs of camping in the desert during the winter months? Is is possible to drive out in the "wild" and spend a week or two and not bother (or be bothered)? I want to visit some of the deserted mining towns and camp in their vicinity.

Well, that's it. I would be grateful if anyone would take the time to answer my questions, even though to you they are common knowledge.
