Back before Sputnick and flying saucers the Old Timers out in the desert were always finding giant Aztec calendars, entrances to caves leading to the nether world and such. The reasons for their astonishing discoveries not being on view-- or lack of directions to the portals--were many and imaginative.
We seem to be getting back to the good old stuff, and this does not bode well for NASA.
