Looks like you got your advice on Cerro Gordo straightened out.

If you go to Racetrack (and I can't imagine that you'll have any troubles reaching it), you might as well head in the direction of Hunter Mountain because you'll be very close, and it's one hell of a lot closer than backtracking out to pavement via Ubehebe. The road up Hunter is well-graded and it's not likely that you'll find yourself unable to turn around. You'll know within the first 5 miles of that road if snow is going to be a problem or not. BUT, the first/last time I tried this route, I was using a computer topo map and GPS coordinates that indicated a road up Hunter originated in Uleda Flat, but it turned out to be a dead end. I continued south, dropping into the canyon, and found the proper road near Goldbelt spring. Once I saw it, it was unmistakeable (let me know if you want GPS coordinates). This is really pretty country, and I'd highly recommend this route, weather (and courage) permitting. I was able to get cell phone signal up on Hunter, if that's any comfort.
