I've had a Qualcomm GSP-1600 phone for the Globalstar system for a few years now. I mostly have it for emergency communications, but will use it on occasion when I want to make a call with no cell coverage. Sat phones aren't cheap, selling for around $600 new. There are a couple listed on Ebay right now. You do need a decent view of the satellites in the sky. I've had problems in heavy tree cover like the redwoods. Metal vehicle roofs will block the signal, but it work fine inside my Jeep with either soft or hardtop (non-metallic). The battery will no longer hold a charge, so I pretty much have to use it plugged into the 12V power cord.
