route from san fransisco?

I'm in LA area and know my way in, but am planning to meet a friend from SF either in Panamint or Beatty NV...and she doesn't know how to get from SF to DV other than what mapquest has told her, which i consider to be bad out of the way directions.

to me it would make sense to come from SF down to the 99 to the 155/178 over walker pass and in thru ridgecrest?
or take 120 thru yosemite and down the 395 to 190 out of olancha?
