Airing down the tires reduces the stiffness (sidewall and tread) of the tires which increases the ability of the tires to conform to whatever they contact and reduces the chance of a puncture. However, airing down will increase the ability of the tire to roll to the side which can give the vehicle more side-to-side movement. If the pressure is too low, the results can be the tire rolling off the bead of the rim.

I’ve only experienced one flat in the years of traveling the desert roads of DV, and this was due to driving too fast for the road conditions, thin tread, a pointed rock, and a fully inflated tire.
