backcountry camping-opinions/ options: last question before I go

Hi everyone. I'm leaning towards exploring the Eureka Dunes/ Steel Pass area this weekend, and want to backcountry camp. I understand I have to leave my vehicle and get away from the road some distance to do this. I have read of some instances of vehicles being shot at or vandalized, so I am reluctant to abandon it. (looking for broken car glass was a good idea by the way)
So my question: any opinions on the Dunes area in terms of safety, or does anyone have any recommendations on good, safe, backcountry sites. I'm not locked into the Dunes Area, it just looks interesting, a bit remote, and my maps don't show any camping restrictions there. Plus I would like to see the Ubehebe Crater. I would think though a more populated campground would be safer I'm guessing, the tradeoff being dealing with other people. I'm a very minimal camper, just a tent, water, a few supplies, and no fire. (everything stays in the Jeep)
I am going alone and I could go some way on Steel Pass if there is good camping, but I'm not going the full route to the Springs from the Dunes side, not something I want to tackle by myself.
Thanks.
