First, congrats on "Hiking Death Valley" -- always one of my top picks. Great research within, but occasionally preachy. The "Explorer's Guide" is great help in planning DV destinations and activities.

Please allow me to strongly second others recommendations for:
Lingenfelter - Death Valley and the Amargosa
Silver Stampede - Neill Wilson
William Manly - Death Valley in '49 (MUST get version annotated by the Johnsons)

May I also issue a strong recommendation for:
Desert Padre -- a first hand look at life in and around DV during the influencial 30's & 40's presented in excerpt of Father Crowley's weekly newspaper column. Insightful, descriptive, humorous, and surprisingly not preachy!

Chuck Gebhardt & Tom Willis - "Inside Death Valley" -- another excellent research, trip planning guide. Little depth, but describes and organizes hundreds of interesting DV destinations
