I feel (IMO) its better for your tires and your equipment to air down. I would tell you to drive 2-3 miles down the wash board road, then air down and judge for yourself.

I run 29 PSI Highway. 15-19psi on drirt roads. and 10-16 psi in sand (when soft and dry)

Two issues to know about airing down, your vehicle is not going to handle as well, SO SLOW DOWN till you check that out. Also you can roll the tire off the bead (the seat on the wheel) this CAN be hard to repair without proper tools or know how.

I seen only a few $50 compressor in use, but the truck air is the best I've seen, BUT (BIG BUT WITH NEW 4RUNNER) you can blow out the non-replaceable fuse on your power sockets with an these plug-in type compressor.

Hope this info helps.
