I have been a Death Valley explorer for 25 years and always look forward to the next adventure. I have always come home from with tired muscles and a new list of places I want to check out on my next trip to the valley. In all these years I have never had a bad or unhappy experience in Death Valley until this last week! Stovepipe Wells has a new camp host that made camping there almost unbearable for myself and a couple buddies I had brought out for their first Death Valley adventure. This camp host couple, Herb and Ginger ruined a weel long stay by for me and most of the other tent campers along the tent only row at Stovepipe Wells campground. This yahoo went through our gear while he thought we were asleep in our tents, when confronted he said he was looking for our camping card, the one you clip to your site so people will know you have paid for and claimed the site for a few days. He also woke everyone up at 6am each morning while doing his daily bike run to check on all us heathen tent campers, said he was looking for infractions. This guy was making up rules as the week went on! Many of the tenters were so unhappy they left their sites at Stovepipe and moved up to Furnace Creek with all the crowds, even that was a better alternative than listening to Captain Herb! Every hour this nut would ride the camp sites and bark out orders to all the tenters. This guy was so mean he was scaring the young kids and a few of the teen girls, they were afraid of him. He made it clear that he was an ex-Marine and expected all us unwashed tent dwellers to snap to his orders! I have never meet a camp host with such an unpleasant attitude. He is the opposite of what a camp host should be. There were no problem tenters, no music, loud voices, rude kids or adults. There were just a good bunch of campers shocked at the way they were treated by the camp host. I am not prone to writting letters or emails like this but I felt I had to vent about this experience. Maybe someone else has had a similar experience and and this host needs a attitude adjustment from the Park Service. I know our parks are too crowded, but this is not the way to keep people from visiting them. The hikes and trips outside of camp were great as usual, just too bad we were under the rule of the host from hell!
