According to the author, he wrote it after being dissatisfied with desert hiking books currently on the market. I personally liked all the stuff on water treatment equipment/methods (there's a review of the new Miox water treatment pen being used by the U.S. military), navigation/GPS information and wildlife observation. There's also a pretty good first aid/hazards section, covers stuff like africanized bees, water intoxication, snakes, gila monster bites, hantavirus and valley fever.
