That all sounds like good advice. I've been travelling to DV for 15 years now, and always fly into Vegas and rent from one of the discount companies. I always turn down the extra insurance, and at $12-20/day, I figure I've saved thousands. The two problems I've encountered have been them giving me the wrong type of vehicle ("SUV", but not 4WD), and of course, flat tires. Usually I get no flat tires, but one trip I got three, fortunately not all at once. Got one right at the Geologist's Cabin, and had to drive very carefully until I reached pavement again. Ideally you should have all-terrain tires and more than one spare. If there's a company renting 4WD vehicles with the intention of having it taken off-road, that is the company I'd rent from. This is all sound advice from the folks lucky enough to live near the park. They've seen it all.
