You might be thinking of Sunset Campground, which really is just a huge parking lot. Texas Spring is up on the hill behind Sunset and is more kid friendly, with nearby hills to climb around on. But it has no trees and no generators allowed there. Furnace Creek Campground has a bit of vegetation, and I believe generators are allowed during the day.

A bit out of the way, but less busy is Mesquite Spring Campground located up in the northern end, not too far from Scotty's Castle.

The campground at Stovepipe Wells is just another parking lot (but much smaller). But they do have a few electricity sites.

Panamint Springs has a very nice campground (and bar/restaurant!). But you either have to drive quite a long way, or want to explore in that area. If you haven't been to Darwin Falls, I'd highly recommend it!
