"The Explorer's Guide to Death Valley National Park" by T. Scott Bryan and Betty Tucker-Bryan is one source of information for things like Starr's Mill. Cyanide was used to extract gold and silver from the rocks. In this area it was gold they were extracting. This method became popular during the early 1900's. Cyanide dissolves the gold, then the gold is filtered from the cyanide.
A great book to help you understand some of the remnants of mining and what it was used for, is "The Mining Camps Speaks" by Beth and Bill Sagstetter".
