My brother and I, and our two sons, went to Death Valley right after Charlie Manson and his bunch were captured. Spent the first night at Panamint City (Yes, you could drive there then). 2nd night was at Newmans cabin in Goler Wash. An old prospector, driving an old Jeep CJ with a Corvair body on it, stopped by to tell us he owned the cabin but to make ourselves at home. Then we continued on into Butte Valley. Stopped at the Geologist's cabin, but it had a padlock on the door. However, there was a sign on the door indicating that if we wanted to stay there, just come up to the Anderson's Camp (Stella's), and get the key. We continued on down into the valley where we hit a blinding dust storm, followed by a rainstorm, both of short duration. Camped that night up in one of the western canyons, made a lean-to tent with canvas tarps and a rope stretched between the 2 Jeeps. Rained that night, but we were snug as a bug in the rug.
The next morning, a towel that we had hung out to dry over night was frozen stiff. Somewhere, I have a picture of one of the boys holding the frozen towel straight out like a flag in the wind. Looked kind of like the picture of the Astronaut holding the flag on the moon. Yes, those were good memories.
