A park ranger explained to me why the kettels are being removed. It's because of the other trash that people leave. A few people are trying to be nice by contributing a handsome kettle. Others stop, take a picture, drop a can and a wrapper, think it's custom in this area to dump your junk at intersections. And they do.

Now, I know the Death Valley rangers think of a plausible excuse for all of their actions, but there could be some truth in this one.
