This is an issue I'm constantly debating with myself, too.

Some people say that it's ok to talk about these secret areas because many people already know about them. I don't buy that: any increase in visitation is going to hurt an area in the long run.

Others say, it's ok, because you can always go during the week, when people aren't present. This oversimplifies things. You and I aren't the only creatures impacted by high use, and those critters which rely on a certain waterhole (for example) cannot afford to wait until Monday to get a drink. Also, the rate of visitation to an area is probably exponential in growth. One person tells another couple of people, who tell another couple of people, until eventually going during the week just gains you less crowding than during weekends -- but it's still crowding.

That's how I thought up until recently, until another poster reminded me that, guess what?, there's a lot more desert out there, not publicized and discussed and revealed like DV is. Maybe we need to accept the Yosemite model: concentrate 95% of visitation in one area. If we can't stop "progress," maybe we can confine it to one area?
