You are right about polyethylene bending and crimping. Once this has happend it will always want to bend again in the same spot. A fairly quick and reliable fix is to throw a worm geared hose clamp around the weak spot. By forcing the tube to remain circular, the weak spot is pretty well reinforced and not nearly as prone to crimp there again. In worst cases, it may be worthwile to use two clamps and a short piece of something stiff as a splint.
If the burros cause recurring problems in a specific area, it might work out well to put the tube inside a section of steel pipe. I think that I recall seeing some up in the canyon.
