Agreed, the elevation reading is the least accurate measurement on the GPS: +/- 50-65 feet in ideal conditions (with SA turned off), less if you aren't seeing all the satellites.
According to Magellan: "GPS elevation may vary +/- 15-20 meters (50-65 feet) due to random errors caused by atmospheric delay, incorrect satellite positioning or poor geometry in the satellite constellation."
