Iíve always been impressed by the various military aircraft Iíve seen while in the desert, but maybe my take is a little different from most on this board. I was trained as a bombardier on the Norden bombsight in the United States Army Air Corps in World War Two and I think that fact helps me understand what these marvelous machines are designed for. It is not to provide thrills to desert travelers.
In a sense I suppose the aircraft represent progress, just as aircraft of the United States were able to drop twice the tonnage of bombs on Viet Nam that was dropped by all the belligerents of World War Two. The bombs dropped by the German Luffwaffe, the Japanese air arms, RAF Bomber Command and the USAAF. I suppose, again, that could be considered progress. Those bombs were dropped to deter a threat to the United States, although what that threat was escaped me then as it escapes me now. As another old guy pointed out on the floor of United States Senate the other day, Senator Byrd of West Virginia, like so many third-world and underdeveloped countries of this world half the population of Iraq are children. Bombs away!
