I have used a Garmin 12XL for several years now. I have found it to be dependable and straight forward to use. It has an external antenna and cigarette lighter adapter for use in a car. Of course, always carry paper maps and compass and know how to use them. One book that I found useful is "A Comprehensive Guide to Land Navigation with GPS" by Noel J. Hotchkiss. It's available on Amazon. Good luck!
