I went to Eureka Valley and the dunes today, rain and snow. Snow falling mixed with rain on the valley floor at 3:00pm today.

Big Pine-Eureka Valley Road - About a foot of snow on the road over the Inyo Range as I passed through, although I'm sure it will be plowed within the next few days when the storm lets up. I did pass four 4x4 vehicles over and back to Big Pine. Dirt portion of the road through Eureka Valley to the sand dunes road light to moderate washboard eastbound, moderate to rough washboards westbound. With the heavy rain in the valley the road was squishy and sloppy. I drove it in 2x4 just fine.

Sand Dunes road - First two miles rough with heavy layer of loose stones. Remainder fine. A bit sloppy and muddy at the picnic/camp area. Fine for 2x4s and autos with prudent driving.

North Eureka Road (connecting Eureka with Fish Lake Valley to the north) - Road is closed as the road exits DVNP at the mouth of Willow Wash Canyon by a deep cut. Two plastic red posts give warning on south side of cut, stones placed across the road on north side. At informational kiosk just inside the DVNP boundary, a road sign on the northbound side, once indicating "DANGER - WASHOUT," was modifiled by someone to read "DANG! WASHOUT."

The Park Service has recently plowed out a small loop road around four concrete picnic tables w/fire rings. The concrete prefab outhouse is still there. An informational kiosk and another information board provides information for the traveler.

I wrote up my afternoon wanderings on my website at www.ttrr.org/~research/trips/eureka.htm and posted some photos on this site.
