The Echo Canyon road is one of my favorite in the park. In addition to its close proximity to the Furnace Creek area, the road offers many interesting things to the visitor. The schwab and Inyo Mine sites are good to see, not to mention Eye of the Needle, as others have already posted.
For a real treat, take the road all the way through to Nevada, and you will see other old camps, as well as great views into the Nevada desert-- at the summit you can glimpse Yucca Mountain, big dune, and miles across the desert. You should have this vista, as well as the remaining upper reaches of the canyon to yourself, unless it is your unlucky day. Comparatively, many other viewpoints are full of tour busses and there is a good chance others will be around. In every trip to Death Valley we take, Echo Canyon is included in the plans, and I have never tired of it. There is also one fairly challenging obstacle in the upper canyon, walk it first, use a spotter, but if you have doubts you can easily turn around.
