The Western Panamints have several old mines with some abandoned equipment to explore. Pleasant Canyon is a steep and difficult access to a few nice claims, and the view from Rogers Pass is extraordinary. Goler Wash is an easier route into Butte Valley, with some good sites (and a short detour to Charles Manson's old hideout, Barker Ranch) along the way. Since most of the Western Panamints lie outside the National Park boundry on BLM controlled land, your ability to venture out further and explore is less restricted. The flavor of 19th and early 20th century desert mining permeates the entire Panamint Valley, which lies just west of Death Valley. A good base to explore this great region from is Panamint Springs Resort, of which much information is available on this very website. Have a great time, and keep an eye out for the infamous Lost Mormon Mine while in the Butte Valley area!
