From your post I couldn't make out if you had looked at the gallery or were just generalizing.
The pictures I take are usually around 450k in size. I bust them down to between 30 and 60k for posting (it depends on the complexity of the picture, simpler compresses better), and also do thumbnails in the 5-10k region. I could probably go a little smaller, but this size seems to work well for me (600 bits wide on the longest dimension, height or width).
