A lot of the dry lake beds that aren't in wilderness or otherwise protected areas are open to vehicular traffic. Some are even used (and on the map) as roads. Another common use of these dry lake beds is for attempting various land-speed records.

It is quite an experience to get out on a huge dry lakebed and cruise across a featureless terrain without any close visual references. It can be kind off eerie, we are so used to driving down marked roads or trails. Very different from driving in sand dunes, with the closer visual references.
