I presented a paper at the 2002 Oregon-California Trail Association meeting in Reno last summer. It dealt with the Towne Pass vs. Pinto Peak routes. The latter is based on a series of false assumptions, bad research, parroting faulty conclusions, and a compelling desire to be iconoclastic..

I’ll send it to the webmaster and he might put it in the Gold section of Deathvalley.com. It has three illustrations (maps): I feel Randy can do a better job of scanning them.

Jean and I welcome all comments on our work. Over time we have uncovered new information that slightly alters some of our conclusions. We will help any researcher or trail buff. We welcome new people and will support any serious researcher.

We are now editing two 1858 diaries that deal with the ’49ers route in southwestern Utah and eastern Nevada. Bennett (of Death Valley fame) guided a Mormon expedition into Central Nevada in 1858. Bennett did not write a diary but the leader and historian of the expedition did. We’ll be out there in February giving a seminar, doing additional work on the route, and looking for the Mr. Naylor’s grave on Mt. Misery. LeRoy
