The road to the summit of Pinto Peak is now closed; it takes off from Emigrant Pass. I have hiked several ways up Pinto. If you decide to go the Jayhawker Canyon route, consider leaving from Upper Emigrant Spring. The trail to Jayhawker Canyon is easy to follow IF you know how to follow old trails. I recommend going in from Emigrant Pass. It is a long, boring hike and can be done in one day if you leave early and are willing to come out in the dark (select a night with a full moon).

As to the gold, don’t bother. The Jayhawkers DID NOT go to the summit of Pinto Peak, contrary to what John Southworth says in his book, “Death Valley in ’49.” Jerry Freeman, the fellow who found the bunk trunk, found it along the trail Southworth outlined in his book. Shortly before Jerry found the trunk, he interviewed Southworth and based on the book and the interview, Jerry found the trunk. (Strange things are done in the land of the blazing sun.”)

Go to home page and click on “Gold” and read the spoof and gold coin article I posted there.
