Project Highlights (quoted from the NPS, not my words!)

Improvements to the Visitor Use Area will include:

Better protection of the fragile pools and the animals that live there

Better exhibits on the area including information on the lowest spot, climate, geology, the salt pan, and the pools.

Better access to the pools and salt pan for everyone including those with disabilities

Better vehicle and pedestrian circulation

Repave 17 Miles of the Badwater Road from Highway 190 to the Badwater Pools

Road will be widened from 20 feet to 24 feet in order to improve safety, and to better accommodate buses, RVs, and bicycles.

Total Project Cost = $5 Million+

Project is being completed in Partnership with the Federal Highway Administration and using visitor entrance and camping fees.


December 2002, Construction Begins

February 3rd, through April 29th, 2003, the Badwater Parking Area and the Badwater Pools will be closed to all Visitors. There will be no access during the construction!

June 2003- Project Complete

Closures / Delays

The Badwater Parking Area and the Pools Will Be Closed to All Visitors for up to 90 Days to allow for the safe demolition and construction of new facilities.

Between now and June 1, 2003 delays of up to 30 minutes each way should be expected on the Badwater Road. The delays will be kept to a minimum.
