John -

I would read the trail reports on this website, and also research the standard road conditions on the official NPS site.

You definitely need a full size spare, and tire repair stuff is useful as well. Biggest problem is sidewall damage, so having tires with strong sidewalls is pretty vital.

GMRS won't be that useful - I don't know of any repeaters you can bounce off of. With a regular 50W mobile 2m setup you might hit something.

Cell phone can be useful, but sometimes only if you are prepared to climb up really high, there just is not dependable coverage outside of the main tourist trek.

The big thing is to just bring enough food and water in case you end up stranded. I usually carry an extra week worth of canned goods and water.

So just be prepared and have a good time. The odds are that you'll be just fine, but just keep in mind that old adage "hope for the best, plan for the worst"
