Thanks to all for the information and especially you, Arkose.
This question arose among a group of us while discussing plumes of dust off of dry lake beds at a distance from the point of our observation; the site of the observers having little or no wind at the times of the observations. These plumes of dust would rise to maybe two thousand feet or more. The phenomenom of "local winds" was the topic of our discussions and we were wondering if we could take some measure of the wind at a distance by having data about the velocities of the winds necessary to create the dust plumes we observed. Aside from that narrow focus the general informtion provided about sand particles and dust particles in wind and the effect of ground cover was very interesting. Hope my question did not bring on any of the damaging winds.
Thanks again,
