Well, nothing like a mental vacation when you can't really be out there! When I worked, I would often take my photo album with me and share with the Y members as I checked them in and out of their exercise classes, and my co-workers so I always felt I was out there somewhere even if I couldn't be out there in reality. I also would write little stories about the places I would go and share with everyone and that always gave everyone a little vacation as well. Important to take time out one way or the other and do these things, or the hustle and bustle of day to day life makes us crazy! A little time in our own back yard, or even sitting in our armchair and envisioning our favorite surroundings in Death Valley, or wherever, does wonders for the soul!
I also think it's important to teach our kids these things too. When my son was little if we couldn't get out to the desert or the mountains, we would just put the sleeping bags in the back yard and camp out. We'd bbq hot dogs or hamburgers, tell stories around the home campfire as we roasted marshmellows, then get in our sleeping bags and watch the stars as best we could with the neighborhood lights around us. Even did this with the two kids I helped raise part time, and they still talk about these good times. Helped to teach them an appreciation of the simple things in life, I think. And as adults they all like to go out and enjoy nature whenever they get a chance now.
