Art,
Art,
A few days ago there was a discussion about the use of GPS in the desert. If, at the junction of the rock alignment in you fine collection of photographs, a GPS position and also the bearing of the short rock alignment at right angles to the main alignment had been made it would be easy to determined the azimuth of the sun, moon or any of the brighter stars or planets on any given date or time from that position and their relationship to the direction of the rock alignment using astronomical programs that can be run on a PC. This could possibly answer your question about the purpose of the short rock alignment.
