I use my GPS (Garmin GPS-III+) mostly to record my track when on the back roads. I like to upload the tracks to a computer and overlay the tracks on various types of maps. When trying to locate a correct turn, I'll often read the current location and locate myself on a paper map. I try to have 7.5min USGS quads of areas I'm not familiar with. I print these myself on 11x17 paper, fold in half, and keep in a protective sleeve in a binder. I will also sometimes preload waypoints of places/things I'm trying to locate. I'll also occasionally record a waypoint of someplace interesting I've visited. Always have an alternate means of navigation along with the other usual desert travel gear.
