>>>what is the best time to go there<<<
That all depends on the 4 of you. Do you like cooler temperatures? Somewhat mild temperatures? Or do you want to feel that real Death Valley by taking on the summer heat? For the valley itself, current temperatures are running from the low 70's to the upper 60's (° F) during the day, and the lower 40's (° F) at night. Outside the valley current temperatures differ greatly as just last weekend it was 28° F at 7:30am where I was camping at around 6500 feet.
>>>where is the must see as the 1st time visitor?<<<
For me that is like asking a parent which child is there favorite! This also depends on what you are going to be doing: auto touring, hiking, backpacking, off-roading, etc...
For both of your questions you might want to read 'A Visitors Guide To Death Valley' which is an online document in PDF format. That should answer some questions and possibly help you in determining a place to visit...
