Please allow me to explain that this is just Coffeecan's way of saying "Hello, and welcome to DeathValley.com. I'm not sure exactly when the road will be reopened." Although he does make a good point in that a tremendous amount of work will certainly be required in order to clear and repair the "road" into the canyon. Perhaps someone can keep us posted on how we can contribute to organized and authorized efforts to do just this.

If you go to the BLM web page for the Ridgecrest office, you will see that they have posted notice of "intent to prepare" both an amendment to the California Desert Conservation Area Plan, and an Environmental Impact Statement for Surprise Canyon. There stands a fair possibility that the road might not be opened before both have been prepared, reviewed, argued-over, protested, counter-protested, revised, re-revised, finalized, re-finalized, and accepted/ratified as may be required. Your best bet might be to contact the BLM office in Ridgecrest and pose your question directly, or wait for Joel to pop in here and give us an update.
