It's a digital display of a map that appears on the GPS receiver. When I bought my GPS, the ratings were not very high on the types with maps, especially in the back country I like to explore. I instead went for a Garmin ETrex which has a pointer to lead you in the right direction. There is a ton of features, and I now consider my GPS to be one of the more important pieces of equipment I bring along. If I were to forget something, I would rather forget it than my trusty paper topo maps, though.
