I've made a couple trips, both on Hondas (1977 250r and 1985 350xlr). My range is limited to about 100 miles, so my main issue is gas. Distances tend to be bigger in DV, unless you concentrate on exploring one local area. A friend of mine uses a 650; it seems to stick to the gravel roads better than mine and has much better range. Of course, trying to get any air on that thing is painful ;)

The looser, gravelly surfaces can be nerve-wracking at high-speed; keep your eyes open for sudden gullies or thicker piles of gravel. Most of your riding will be just high-speed dirt/washboard road, with most of one's attention spent on the road instead of the scenery.

And it can get pretty damn cold, too, so dress right.
