When GPS first came out I didn't think much of them, but now I find them quite useful - particularly when scouting out a remote area that you haven't been to before. Once you have GPS coordinates and keep track of them for future visits, it makes it much easier to find just the spot you are looking for. Particularly useful for remote ghost towns and mining camps that aren't particularly marked well on a regular map.
Gps aren't absolutely necesary, of course, but are helpful and fun to have.

Keep in mind if you are ever stranded and have gps coordinates to call in to your rescuers, it makes pinpointing your exact location easier. Also, if you make your own maps, GPS comes in quite handy. Still a good idea to have the appropriate maps to use for the areas you travel to, in addition to the GPS, of course. And there's nothing wrong with an old fashion compass!
