That is the King Midas Mine. It produced about 300 tons of ore and was last worked (as far as I know) in 1955. I visited the site about 5 weeks ago and did not see the engine you spoke of.
The canyon displays some nice geology, intersting bits and piles of junk, nice tramway, and solitude.
To get to the mine I had to take the "muletrail" as progress was interupted by about a 90' fall approximately 3/4 mile into the canyon. It looked like it may be possible to bypass the fall but I was solo so opted for the sure bet on the trail. I went over the ridge north of the canyon thinking I could contour over to the Keene but got rimrocked out and ended up taking the ridge to Chloride Cliff. I then dropped down the cable road to that other mine and then through the Keene and back to the parking lot. It was awsome but I would rate it a "don't try this at home".
